What to Know About Gangotri
Gangotri, one of the sacred Char Dhams (four holy pilgrimage sites of northern India), is a serene town located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. At the heart of this peaceful Himalayan destination stands the revered Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga.
Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,415 m, Gangotri is among the highest and most spiritually significant pilgrimages in India. The journey from Rishikesh to Gangotri takes around 12 hours by road, passing through towering Garhwal Himalayan peaks, dense deodar forests, river valleys and charming mountain villages.
Beyond its divine aura, Gangotri captivates visitors with breathtaking natural beauty. According to Hindu mythology, this is the sacred place where the River Ganga descended from heaven to earth after Lord Shiva released the river from his matted locks.

The actual origin of the Ganga lies at Gaumukh, a glacier located about 19 km from Gangotri. Pilgrims and trekkers can reach Gaumukh via a scenic and moderately challenging trek. From its origin at Gaumukh, the river is known as Bhagirathi. It is only after meeting the Alaknanda River at Devprayag that it officially takes the name Ganga.
The Kapat (temple doors) of Gangotri Temple are now open for darshan, welcoming devotees from all over India.
